By request, Autumnalis Rosea on the left, then Accolade and Whitcomb from January 2008, It's not a great comparison, because it's hard to convey how small the Autumnalis Rosea blossoms are - they're really about half the size of the other two, but in the spring, I've read that they're larger and are the size of the Accolades, so it's harder to tell those two apart. Douglas Justice of UBC Botanical Garden describes the Accolades (middle one) as follows, on the UBCBG Forum: "The pink, which is considerably brighter than in 'Autumnalis Rosea' and considerably less mauve than in 'Whitcomb', tends to migrate to the petal edges as the flowers open. This creates a pale pink, almost white, open centre to the flowers. The yellow anthers are thus displayed more prominently, as compared with 'Autumnalis Rosea', which has twisted petals that tend to crowd the centre of the flower"
Douglas says the Accolades start more cuplike and open to be more saucer-shaped. The Whitcomb flowers fade as they age and the petals separate, but they're single blossoms (just one row of 5 petals) so they should be easy to distinguish from the others even after they fade to a similar colour.
In late February and early March, these three are pretty much the only ones in bloom (there's also an Autumnalis, like Autumnalis Rosea but almost white - I haven't seen those yet). After that, there's a whole new set of blossoms to confuse with each other.
Well, that was more than anyone needs to know.
The well known Accolade II sits at Adelaide Brighton Cement's Klein Point Limestone Quarry loading dock on the Yorke Peninsula before heading back to Birkenhead.
